Historical note
Under the direction of Lucy Sprague Mitchell, administrative decisions were made cooperatively. The finance and administration records reflect this pattern of decision-making. From the founding of the Bureau through the 1940s, many of the administrative duties were handled by the Working Council. The formal establishment of administrative offices coincided with the presidency of John H. Niemeyer and the efforts to create a more formal organizational structure in the 1950s.

Abstract
This record group of the institution was generated by the Working Council beginning in 1916 and, later, the Division of Finance and Administration. In over eight decades of Bank Street College and predecessor, The Bureau of Educational Experiments, several offices were established to govern, manage finances, and provide for essential aspects of running the institution. Correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, financial statements, and other record types document the business of these offices.
