Scope and Contents

The collection documents Edna Shapiro’s role as a member of the Research Division and faculty member at Bank Street College for more than thirty years. Additional records of her work in the Research Division are also included. Record genres include administrative records, correspondence, instructional and educational works, notes, publications, reports, and school records.

Biographical note

Edna Kaufmann Shapiro received her BA from Mt. Holyoke College in 1946. After completing her degree she worked as a Research Assistant in the Psychosocial Research Unit at Mt. Holyoke. She left in 1947 to attend Yale University where she received an MA in psychology in 1948 and a PhD in 1951. While at Yale she worked as a Research Assistant in the Institute of Human Relations and an Instructor in Psychology at Bard College.

Shapiro’s interest in the interplay of developmental psychology and education drew her to the Research Division of Bank Street College. She worked as a graduate faculty member and Research Psychologist until 1990 and served as the Research Division’s Associate Dean from 1984 to 1987. She served as Distinguished Research Psychologist Emeritus until her death in 2005.

Abstract

The Edna K. Shapiro Papers were created over the course of Shapiro’s career with the Research Division of Bank Street in the latter half of the twentieth century. The materials span her research study endeavors and participation on the faculty. Her work was collected in observational notes, reports, correspondence, publications, administrative files, and several other formats.
